The noble character traits found in the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) are too numerous to mention but there are four particular virtues which are regarded as the wellspring from which all other character traits spring forth. These four virtues (wisdom, temperance, justice and courage), known as the Ummuhat al Fadhail (The Sources of all Virtue) or cardinal virtues have a direct physical and spiritual connection with the martial arts of Archery, Horsemanship, Swimming and Wrestling, which are integral to developing and the aforementioned virtues. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) mastered all these martial arts and instructed parents on numerous occasions to teach these to their children. The companions (including women) made these arts a part of their lives as they understood the significance of them in order to become stronger physically but more importantly in terms of character.
In the current turbulent, confusing and constantly evolving environments our children find themselves in, it is essential that they are able to not only acquire the knowledge needed but also to develop the character traits required to be able to navigate successfully through the difficult challenges they experience on a daily basis.
The martial arts mentioned above will be taught as an integral part of the core Madrassa curriculum and participation in them will be mandatory for all students to allow holistic development.
